Located in Leduc County, Alberta, next to the Edmonton International Airport, Century Mile Racetrack and Casino is a top-tier horse racing facility and entertainment center. As the only one-mile racetrack in western Canada and one of two "A-level" horse racing venues in Alberta, Century Mile offers a unique and exhilarating experience for horse racing enthusiasts.
History of Century Mile Racetrack and Casino
The Transition from Northlands Park
In February 2016, Northlands, the organization behind Northlands Park, announced that racing would end at their facility following the 2016 season. This decision came after 116 years of operation, as part of Northlands' "Vision 2020" proposals. The organization planned to redevelop Northlands Park into an "urban festival site" capable of hosting large-scale outdoor events. This move was primarily due to the expected decline in financial viability once the Edmonton Oilers' new downtown arena, Rogers Place, opened, attracting most major indoor events previously held at the Northlands-operated Rexall Place.
Horse Racing Alberta stated its disappointment in the decision and expressed a commitment to finding a new venue in the region. They aimed to work with Northlands Park during the transition out of racing to minimize the impact on the industry. In May 2016, Horse Racing Alberta solicited expressions of interest for a new "A-level" track license, receiving interest from parties such as Century Casinos (owner of Alberta's other A-level circuit, Century Downs near Calgary) and Enoch Cree Nation, among others.
Century Casinos' Winning Bid
In September 2016, Horse Racing Alberta announced that it had accepted Century Casinos' bid, which planned to build a racetrack and casino in Leduc. Century's vision involved constructing a one-mile track (compared to Northlands Park's 5/8-mile track), the only one of its kind in Western Canada. The new track would inherit events previously held at Northlands Park, including the prestigious Canadian Derby.
Horse Racing Alberta reached agreements with Northlands to continue racing at their facility while the new Century Mile Racetrack and Casino was under construction. The new venue officially opened its doors on April 1, 2019.
